Creating a Community

The most important factor in the success of cohousing communities is forming the community.   In our first months together we held bi-weekly potlucks to get to know one another and to explore common values and individual priorities. After much thoughtful discussion, and struggling to articulate our deepest values, we developed a vision statement meaningful to all.

Through the many potlucks and dessert meetings which followed, our sense of community has grown and blossomed. Our vision and our agreement to use consensus as our means of making decisions define the essence of our community.  The glue that holds it together is mutual respect, neighbourly caring and support, and concern for the common good of not only our own community but the world around us.

Community is the heart of successful cohousing.
